35th TOPIK 2| 23-24

Welcome back to my TOPIK 2 blog. Let's continue with the exercises 23-24 from the 35th annual language exam.

Looking back this was so far the most difficult text for me to understand. After going through all the exercises until no.34 I will still name this one the hardest. It`s long and there are many specific expressions which honestly even Naver could not get me right.

Vocabulary

운영하다 (運營): to operate, to manage

사정 (事情): circumstance

공장 (工場): factory

피해를 (被害) 입다: to suffer damage

매출 (賣出): closing

감소하다 (減少): to decrease

불러 모아 놓다: to call together

지그시: gently, patiently

겨우: only, just

입을 떼리다: to open one’s mouth

마치: as if

천하를 얻은 듯: being on top of the world

든든하다: to feel reassured, safe

Here are the expressions that might be good to remember as a whole:

• 내가 운영하는 회사

• 불이 나서 피해를 입다

• 매출까지 크게 감소한 것이다

• 직원 수를 줄이다

• ~을/를 한자리에 불러 모아 놓다

• 한참을 아무 말도 없다

• 입을 떼려는 순간

• 내 앞으로 내밀다

• 도움이 될까 싶다

Just a quick note on this last one because that's my first time seeing this pattern. It has two usages:

• I am afraid that....( similar to 을까 보다)

• I am wondering if....

As for the “천하를 얻은 듯” it was not 100% clear for me how I should incorporate it into a sentence hence I collected a few examples for a better understanding:

• 천하를 어든 기분이다

• 천하를 얻은 듯하다

• 천하를 얻은 듯 기쁘다

• 천하를 얻은 것 같다
